BACK IN BUSINESS - AUG 22, 2005

They did it! I saw them do it! And it was neat too!!

I got to witness NASA Return to Flight, live, some 12 miles (as the bird flies) from launch pad 39B. It was my first ever launch viewing of any kind, which is not very commendable considering I live just about 40 minutes from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral.

This was my second attempt at witnessing STS 114 lift off. The first time I drove up to see it, NASA called it off because of the fuel sensor malfunction. It was not fun, returning empty handed. I can almost imaging what goes through the minds of the astronauts who have to unbuckle and step out of the Shuttle every time they cancel. Did you know? - Every launch called off, costs NASA about $500,000!!

Launch viewing tips - If you want to watch the launch ,and don't have the tickets to watch it from within the KSC, here is some advice you might want to consider. If you are anywhere in the Orlando area, you have the option of taking either Toll Rd. 528, State Rd. 50 or County Rd. 46 to head towards the Atlantic coast. However, consider Co. Rd. 46. It seems to have the least traffic on launch days. You will have to head east of I4 before you get to 46 and head east. Then, you will have to head south along US Highway 1 to downtown Titusville. Park anywhere along the banks of Indian River in Titusville and you should be able to get a very clear line of sight view of launch pads 39A and 39B.

I clicked this picture of Discovery during its STS 114 mission, from the banks of the Indian River in Titusville. The perfectly symmetric birds were a very lucky break.
